Birdfriend - Demo

Heavy intrumental music made by a bunch of stinky acid eating hippies from Toms River / Long Branch NJ in the early 90's. I don't know if they ever made tape covers but i don't have one. They might have just made this to give to Jacko @ The Brighton Bar / Cafe Bar to get some gigs. The tape is also kind of wonky but I'm throwing it out there anyway. Pretty twisted Frank Zappa styled heavy metal, acid rock, surf rock freakout stuff. My memory is foggy but i think Jason Silverio played drums, or maybe Jim Butler? Or was it Matt Gunverdahl??? and Joe Butler bass w/ John Butler on Guitar but i could be wrong. These 2 songs are taped over a "Toast" demo tape that was the Butler brothers other band. If anyone has any more info please drop it...

Helen Shapiro - Demo

Throw equal parts Frank Zappa, Primus & Black Sabbath w/ some punk rock and thrash metal thrown in for good measure and you might get close to Helen Shapiro. Great band to see live and great guys. Bass player Tony Ricci was a close friend back in the day and took trips out of town with my old band Godspeed (He had a truck) and even played sax on our record "Ride". I think he moved out west and i aint heard from him since. Maybe, he will read this and get in touch!?! I still have my Helen Shapiro shirt with the cover of this demo on it.... strangely over the years it shrunk and doesn't fit anymore but it aint going anywhere. Hard to believe that this shit all happened over 20 years ago.... I only wish that we all had iPhones and video technology at our finger tips back then like we do now so more of the shit we did was documented. it's all lost to time and memory and these memories are fading as time goes on.... This was recorded at Subterranean Sound in Long Branch by Stacey Phelon where everybody from the shore recorded. And the members were Rob (Secretious) Avison, Jon (Flagpole) Baron & Tony (Cow) Ricci. If anyone know where Tony is tell him to drop me a line!

Boneless - 1991 Demo

Sorta punk rock & roll from South Jersey. Boneless put this tape out in 1991. The Seattle "grunge" element is totally present. Don't let that put you off. This is a pretty cool little mix of punk, grunge, metal, art rock & plain old rock and roll. They sounded great live after 12 beers and a few shots.

Big Nurse - 1989 Demo

One of my fave (mostly) unknown New Jersey bands, Big Nurse w/ their 1989 self titled demo. These guys should have rode the Seattle "grunge" wave to superstardom but.... you know, the best laid plans and all that. "Hey Hey" & "Tied Up" from this demo tape only release were released on Heat Blast Records (HB 002) and "Love You Tomorrow" was released on the 7 inch compilation "Holier Than Seattle" also on heat Blast Records HB003.

I've already written a small little piece on the band over at my other blog "The Devils Music" take a peek if you feel the need...

SIVLE - Live @ T-Birds Cafe Asbury Park, N.J. 6-13-94 & The Brighton Bar Long Branch N.J. 4-23-94

The King Is Dead! Long Live The King? Rock & Roll suicide.... I just got this tape in the mail from an old friend. Wow.... memories. Some live jamming shenanigans by a bunch of stinky acid taking hippes deconstructing rock & roll. They all lived in one house and it was actually dubbed "The Hippy House". Lots of jams & drugs and drinking and what not.... I promise you, you will not hear this anywhere on the web but here. And probably for good cause... Dose up maaaaaaaaaan.....

SmogMonster - Demo

Bio
SmogMonster is the spawn of great BASS heavy bands of the past , such as Flipper, Deep Purple, and yes even Sabbath, and more recent extreme bass-based bands, such as GodHeadSilo, EnemyMine, Death From Above and Lightning Bolt. .. The band is named after one of the finest Godzilla films of all times - - the environmentally conscious semi-musical/semi-animated early 70’s "Godzilla vs. The Smogmonster" - "history shows us again and again, how nature points out the folly of men ...." .. Armed with stacks of old and semi-reliable Ampeg, Peavey, Kustom and Guild amplifiers and a handful of old Fender basses - SmogMonster produces a big low-end throb that relies on extreme volume and lots of overdrive to make two basses and drums fill in all the sonic spaces. .. SmogMonster is Krishna on fuzz bass, Dave on base bass, Rick on drums and Nino on vocals. .. Also - if any of your are guitar weenies - check out Krishna’s guitar and bass restoration service - "any guitar, any color": .. http://www.bostonguitarrepair.com

Hell Sausage - Look Up AT The Sun And Sneeze Demo

One of the best demo tapes you have never heard. Noise & awesomeness from NJ circa mid/late 80's on the equally awesome Cool Beans Tapes. Cool Beans was run by one time Monster Magnet guitarist John McBain & Former Monster Magnet drummer/singer and light dude and all around great guy Tim Cronin.

Pretty sure this was Joe Hell Sausage alone in his garage drunk and high and making music pretty much for himself. It rules.

I love this tape.

Suburban Uprise - Live @ City Gardens

For the 4th of July i give you some American Skin music.

Before they were known as just The Uprise, they were Suburban Uprise. I lost the track list to this tape years ago but i know they start out with Skin Head March... I'm pretty sure this is live at City Gardens in Trenbton NJ but i can't be 100% sure. But that was The Uprise's stomping ground. There is a bunch of shit written about these guys being all WP but i don't know nothing about that. When we hung out with them we ALL hung out, blacks, whites, browns. So maybe that shit happened but it happened when we weren't around.

If anyone can help with the track list that would rule. I know what a few are because they call them out during the set. But Most i have no idea. Here is what i think is here. Help me fill in the blanks....

Skinhead March

Social Decay - Practice Tape Sept. Oct. 87

SOCIAL DECAY REHEARSAL TAPE FROM 1987... Its a little noisy and ruff but man we were thrashing shit up back then. Fast and noisy drunk-core! I left some of the banter is as well. It is really great hearing Eddie alive and talking and asking what time it is because he has to be home for dinner! classic. RIP brother. Also Rich Beattie saying he wants to drink a little more.... and a little story about the "God Father".... Stupid, stupid fun... I know this might not appeal to lots of people but this is for my friends and for me... I guess you had to be there...

NJ SUNSHINE Tape - Mechanical Bride - The Burnt - A.O.D. - New Republic

This tape was made for me by Harry Baggs. Harry ran the great NJ Zine Ear Wax back in the day. He also played guitar and sand in Mechanical Bride. We were kinda friendly back then. And he would send me tapes of stuff. He was also a good friend of Social Decay and gave us a lot of exposure in his zines early on.

I'm pretty sure The Mechanical Bride stuff is from one of their demo's and Side B is live stuff from The House Of Wax. Which were shows Harry would put on at his house. Sounds like everyone was having a good time! the Burnt give us a few very non PC tunes as only they could. AOD doing what they do best which is being goofy w/ a rap about crack and New Republic give us a Kiss cover... Can i have another beer?

Enjoy.

Mechanical Bride - 29 Grand

Mechanical Bride - The Posse

Mechanical Bride - Picnic Ground

The Burnt - I Hate You / Social Disease

A.O.D. - Crack Rap

New Republic - I Want You
